How to Plan a Trip to Egypt by Yourself (Without Tour Groups or Guides)

Planning a trip to Egypt by yourself might sound intimidating at first, but independent travel in Egypt is absolutely possible and incredibly rewarding. Instead of following a fixed itinerary with tour groups, travelling independently allows you to explore ancient temples, bustling markets, and the Nile at your own pace.

In this guide, you’ll learn how I planned my Egypt trip all by myself. From visas, to transport, safety tips, accommodation, and the best places to visit. You will also find bonus tips on how to bargain for the best deals! so join me on this journey

Why Travel Egypt Without a Tour Group?

Many travellers assume Egypt must be visited through organised tours, even I used to think so myself. Although organised tours might make visiting Egypt less chaotic and easier to navigate, independent travel has several advantages:

  • Flexibility: Visit attractions when you want without a rigid schedule. This is a huge advantage in avoiding the crowds.

  • Lower costs: Visiting Egypt can be as expensive or as budget-friendly as you want it to be. Organising the travel yourself helps you avoid expensive and overrated tour guides

  • More authentic experiences: Doing a self-organised trip helps you to visit less-touristy places and truly dive into the authenticity Egypt has to offer. Who knew Cairo had so much more to offer than just a day trip to visit Giza Necropolis?!

  • Freedom to customise your itinerary.

While organised tours can be convenient, planning your own trip allows you to create a more personal experience.

Decide the Best Time to Visit Egypt

Never underestimate the Egyptian Sun! Never visit Egypt in the summer months, in my opinion, even May is very warm.

I visited Egypt in January, and although pleasant for most part, it was still very warm in different sites. I even had to take off my pullover and wear tank tops. So the best time to visit Egypt is generally between October and April, when temperatures are cooler, and sightseeing is more comfortable.

Summer months (June–August) can be extremely hot, especially in southern cities like Luxor and Aswan.

Peak tourist months include:

  • December

  • January

  • February

Check Visa Requirements

Most travellers need a tourist visa to enter Egypt.

The easiest option is the e-visa, which you can apply for online before arrival. Some nationalities can also obtain a visa on arrival at Egyptian airports.

Typical requirements include:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months

  • Completed visa application

  • Visa fee (usually around $25 USD)

Always check the latest visa rules before travelling.

Plan Your Egypt Itinerary

When planning a trip to Egypt on your own, it helps to map out a simple route between major destinations.

A classic 10–14 day Egypt itinerary might include:

Cairo: Home to the famous Great Pyramid of Giza, Egyptian Museum, and the bustling markets of Khan el-Khalili.

Recommended stay: 3–4 days.

Luxor: Often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, Luxor is home to:

Karnak Temple

Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Queens

Hatshepsut Temple

Deir el-Medina and so much more

Recommended stay: 2–3 days.

Aswan: A relaxed city along the Nile with beautiful scenery and historic temples, such as:

Philae Temple, then travel to

Abu Simbel: One of Egypt’s most impressive temples, built by Ramesses II.

Recommended stay: 2–3 days.

Egypt’s Red Sea: End your trip with a beach retreat. Egypt has great coastline, coral life, and amazing diving and snorkelling options (caution advised because of shark attacks)

Places like Hurghada, Maria-Alam, El-Ghouna, Sharm el-Sheikh

Recommended stay: as many days as you need!

Luxor Temple
Khan-el-Khalili Bazaar in Cairo

Book Transportation in Advance

Getting around Egypt independently is easier than many travellers expect. There are many options from domestic flight, to ride-hailing apps, taxis, or even Buses (I would not recommend buses)

Domestic Flights

Flights between Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan save time and are relatively affordable. I flew from Cairo to Luxor, and it was about 100 Euros and took one and a half hours. I flew with Air Egypt, and the process was super smooth. I usually compare and book cheap flights on this platform.

Trains

The sleeper train between Cairo and Luxor/Aswan is also a popular choice with travellers. You can find booking information for trains here

Ride Apps

In Cairo, apps like Uber and Careem make getting around simple and affordable. I exclusively used Uber and Careem to get around in Cairo and Giza. Do not rely on ride-hailing apps in any Egyptian city other than Cairo and Giza. I have written a detailed blog on how to move around in Egypt between and within the cities.

Choose the Right Accommodation

Egypt offers accommodation for every budget.

Options include:

Staying in central locations helps reduce travel time to major attractions.

Popular neighbourhoods include:

Downtown Cairo (if you want to experience Cairo and not only Giza). I stayed here; it was generally okay and not a luxury stay, but it was good enough.

Giza Necropolis Accommodations (if you only visit Cairo for Giza)

Zamalek Island (for upscale living in Cairo)

Luxor East Bank. I would recommend staying exclusively on the East Bank and taking a day trip to the West Bank.

Understand Safety and Local Etiquette

Egypt is generally safe for travellers, but it’s important to stay aware and respect local customs. Helpful tips include:

  • Dress modestly in religious areas.
  • Carry small cash for tips and entry fees.
  • Avoid unofficial guides at major attractions.
  • Use trusted transport options.

Travelling confidently and respectfully helps create a smoother experience.

Budget for Your Trip

One of the biggest benefits when you plan a trip to Egypt by yourself is controlling your budget.

Average daily costs may include:

  • Accommodation: $20–$150

  • Meals: €5–€20

  • Transport: €2–€30

  • Attraction tickets: €5–€40

Independent travel can be significantly cheaper than organised tour packages.

Don’t Miss These Egyptian Experiences

While exploring Egypt independently, make sure to include these unforgettable experiences:

  • Watching the sunrise or sunset at the Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Sailing the Nile on a traditional felucca
  • Visiting the temples of Luxor
  • Exploring local markets in Cairo

These moments often become the highlights of the trip.
